Hormone Balance and Support

Naturopathic Care for Hormone Balance

A Naturopathic Approach to Long-Term Hormonal Health

Hormone imbalance is one of the most common concerns we see, and one of the most complex.

Many patients are confused by their symptoms and are told their symptoms are “just part of aging,” related to stress, or something they simply have to manage. Others are given short-term solutions that don’t fully address how they feel day-to-day or support their long-term health. Still others are thrown on hormones without baseline labs or a full historical picture, and end up more imbalanced than they were without treatment.

Hormones influence nearly every system in the body, including energy, mood, metabolism, sleep, reproductive health, and stress response. When they fall out of balance, the effects are often widespread and difficult to pin down.

Because of this, hormone care must go beyond symptom management alone.

At Canby Clinic, we take the time to understand your full health picture, your history, and the patterns behind your symptoms. From there, we create a plan focused on restoring hormone balance and supporting long-term health.

What Hormone Imbalance Can Feel Like

Hormones are like a fingerprint; each person’s balance is unique to their body.  Hormone imbalance can look very different depending on the individual, the life stage, and which systems are involved.

Some patients notice gradual changes over time, while others experience more noticeable shifts tied to specific life transitions.

Common experiences include:

  • Persistent fatigue or low energy
  • Mood swings, irritability, or anxiety
  • Difficulty sleeping or staying asleep
  • Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
  • (Women) Irregular menstrual cycles
    • PMS symptoms or worsening premenstrual symptoms
    • Hot flashes or night sweats
  • Low libido
  • Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
  • Hair thinning or skin changes
  • Increased sensitivity to stress
  • Headaches
  • Palpitations
  • Feeling “off” without a clear explanation

Even when symptoms are mild, a persistent hormone imbalance can affect metabolic and cardiovascular health, as well as overall well-being, over time.

Why Hormone Imbalance Happens

Like most things in our bodies, hormones do not operate in isolation.

They are part of a connected system involving the brain, thyroid, adrenal glands, liver, metabolism, and reproductive organs. When one part of this system shifts, others often follow.

In many cases, hormone imbalance develops gradually as multiple factors interact.

Some of the most common contributors we evaluate include:

  • Chronic stress and elevated cortisol

  • Blood sugar imbalance or insulin resistance

  • Thyroid dysfunction

  • Perimenopause, menopause, or andropause

  • Postpartum hormonal shifts

  • Nutrient deficiencies

  • Sleep disruption

  • Gut health and microbiome imbalance

  • Chronic inflammation

  • Environmental exposures that affect hormone signaling

  • Certain prescription medications

  • Family history and genetics

  • Liver health and metabolic function

For many patients, symptoms are not caused by a single issue, but by patterns across several systems.

Hormone Imbalance in Women

Hormonal shifts are a normal part of a woman’s life; each woman hopes the transitions are smooth.   Some transitions are rockier than others, and symptoms should not be dismissed or endured without support.

Women often experience hormone imbalance in patterns tied to the menstrual cycle or specific life stages, including postpartum, perimenopause, and menopause.

Common concerns we see include:

  • Irregular or painful menstrual cycles
  • PMS or PMDD symptoms
  • Heavy or unpredictable bleeding
  • Fertility challenges
  • Perimenopausal symptoms like mood changes, sleep disruption, and cycle irregularity
  • Menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness

Estrogen and progesterone play central roles and are closely linked to thyroid function, stress hormones, adrenal health,  liver wellness, and metabolic health. When one system is out of balance, others often follow.

For many women, symptoms are not caused by hormones alone but by how the entire system functions. And that’s what we do in naturopathic medicine, look at the whole system and how to better support it.

Hormone Imbalance in Men

Hormone imbalance in men is often less discussed, but it is just as real and can significantly affect quality of life and relationships.

Testosterone levels can naturally change over time, but symptoms are often influenced by more than age alone. Stress, sleep, metabolic health, environmental exposures, and overall lifestyle play a major role.

Common concerns we see include:

  • Low energy or persistent fatigue
  • Reduced muscle mass or strength
  • Increased body fat, particularly around the abdomen
  • Low libido or changes in sexual function
  • Mood changes, including irritability or low motivation
  • Difficulty concentrating or mental fog
  • Poor recovery from exercise
  • Sleep disruption

Testosterone does not function in isolation. It is closely connected to cortisol (a stress hormone), insulin (blood sugar regulation), liver function, and overall metabolic health.

In many cases, supporting these systems can have a meaningful impact on how men feel day-to-day. As with any care we provide, naturopathic medicine considers how all systems work to help restore a natural balance.

Our Naturopathic Approach to Hormone Balance

We offer primary care services through a naturopathic lens, focusing on both symptom management and the underlying factors contributing to hormone imbalance.  We work to identify the cause of the condition and treat specific systems to restore health.

Depending on your needs, your plan may include:

    • Identifying your hormonal pattern
Hormone imbalance is not one-size-fits-all, and there are multiple variables to consider. We take time to understand your specific symptoms, cycle patterns (if applicable), life stage, and overall health picture to identify what may be driving your experience.
    • Hormone and metabolic evaluation
When appropriate, we assess hormone levels alongside related systems, such as thyroid function, stress hormones, and metabolic markers, to better understand how your body regulates itself.
  • Nutrition and blood sugar support
Blood sugar stability plays a major role in hormone balance. We use evidence-based nutrition strategies to support consistent energy, reduce stress on the body, and improve hormonal signaling.
  • Stress support and nervous system regulation
Chronic stress is one of the most common drivers of hormone imbalance. We address stress physiology, recovery capacity, and nervous system health as core parts of care.
  • Herbal medicine and targeted supplements
Some herbal medicine approaches and physician-grade supplements may support hormone metabolism, stress response, and symptom relief. These are selected and dosed carefully based on your individual needs.
  • Screening exams and lab evaluation
We may recommend labs to evaluate hormone levels, thyroid function, metabolic health, nutrient status, and other contributing factors when appropriate.

Medication Use and Prescription Management

Some patients come to us already using hormone therapy or other medications. Others are exploring their options and want to better understand what’s happening in their body before starting treatment or making choices appropriate for them.

In some cases, medication or hormone therapy can play an important role.

Our goal is to support your overall health alongside any necessary treatment, helping to address underlying contributors to hormone imbalance while improving how you feel day-to-day.

When medication is part of your care, we support responsible prescription management. We prescribe bioidentical hormones (that look just like the hormones your body makes) in tailored doses, starting low and increasing only if needed.  We can coordinate with your prescribing provider when appropriate.
