Joint Pain Support

Naturopathic Care for Joint Pain

A Naturopathic Approach to Long-Term Joint Health

Joint pain can be disruptive in ways that go beyond physical discomfort.

For some, it’s morning stiffness that makes it harder to get moving. For others, it’s persistent aches, reduced mobility, or pain that limits daily activities, exercise, or sleep.

Many patients are offered anti-inflammatory medications or told that joint pain is simply part of aging or natural wear and tear on the body. While that may apply in some cases, they often don’t tell the full story.

Joint pain is often influenced by more than just the joint itself, aging, or wear and tear. Inflammation, metabolism, hormones, immune function, and overall tissue health all play a role.

Because of this, we approach joint pain through a broader lens.

At Canby Clinic, we understand that joint pain can throttle your life.  When it keeps you from sleeping, your body is not able to restore, likely leading to more pain and a prolonged healing time.

When you have joint pain, you are less likely to exercise, which can affect blood sugar, cholesterol, hormone levels, energy, and mood.  Joint pain also keeps you from doing your regular daily activities, which may mean less time with friends or family, less energy, and less bandwidth to make a healthy meal or take care of your household.

For all of these reasons and more, we take joint pain seriously. We take the time to understand your symptoms, your history, and what may be contributing to your joint pain. From there, we build a plan rooted in naturopathic medicine that supports both symptom relief and long-term joint health.

What Joint Pain Can Feel Like

Joint pain can vary widely depending on the cause, severity, and overall health of the individual.

Some patients experience occasional discomfort, while others deal with ongoing or progressive symptoms.

Common experiences include:

  • Stiffness, especially in the morning or after inactivity
  • Aching or throbbing joints
  • Swelling or tenderness
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Pain with movement or exercise
  • Joint instability or weakness
  • Pain that worsens with certain activities
  • Fatigue associated with chronic discomfort

Even when symptoms are mild, ongoing joint pain can affect mobility, activity levels, and quality of life over time.

Why Joint Pain Happens

Joint pain is often as individual as the person who comes in for naturopathic care. It’s often influenced by multiple factors, not just one.

Some of the most common contributors we evaluate include:

  • Chronic inflammation
  • Autoimmune activity
  • Previous injury or joint stress
  • Muscle imbalances or poor movement patterns
  • Hormone imbalance, especially during midlife transitions
  • Digestive issues and gut-related inflammation
  • Nutrient deficiencies that affect joint and tissue health
  • Metabolic health and blood sugar imbalance
  • Chronic stress and poor recovery
  • Aging-related changes in connective tissue
  • Family history and genetics

For many patients, joint pain develops gradually as several of these factors interact over time.

Types of Joint Pain

Not all joint pain is alike. In fact, it can arise from several different underlying patterns or conditions, ranging from acute to chronic. Understanding how your symptoms present helps guide the right approach.

Inflammatory Joint Pain

When acute, this type of joint pain is typically related to an injury. However, joint inflammation may also be an immune system response or cartilage disorder, both of which are due to other underlying conditions.

It may present as:

  • Swelling, warmth, or redness
  • Morning stiffness that improves with movement
  • Pain in multiple joints, unexplained, or in a single joint after injury
  • Flare-ups that come and go

Inflammatory joint pain may be influenced by immune system activity, collagen formation, gut health, nutrient status, and systemic inflammation.

Degenerative or Mechanical Joint Pain

Often described as “wear and tear,” this type of joint pain is more closely related to joint structure and long-term use, such as repetitive use injuries.

It may present as:

  • Pain that worsens with activity
  • Stiffness after periods of rest
  • Reduced joint mobility over time
  • Localized discomfort in weight-bearing joints

While structural changes can play a role, inflammation, muscle support, and overall health still influence how symptoms develop and progress.

Systemic or Referred Joint Pain

Sometimes, joint pain is not just joint pain; it’s not isolated to the specific joint. Instead, it reflects broader patterns in the body.

This may include:

  • Joint discomfort linked to metabolic health
  • Pain associated with autoimmune conditions
  • Joint symptoms that fluctuate with hormonal changes
  • Widespread aches rather than a single joint issue

For example, patients experiencing hormone imbalance may notice increased joint stiffness or discomfort, particularly during perimenopause or other hormonal shifts. Similarly, underlying inflammation associated with digestive issues can also affect joint health.

Our Naturopathic Medicine Approach to Joint Pain

We provide primary care services using a naturopathic medicine approach, focusing on both symptom management and the underlying causes of joint pain.

Depending on your needs, your plan may include:

  • Understanding your joint pain pattern
Not all joint pain has the same cause. We take time to understand how your symptoms present, what triggers them, and how they’ve changed over time.
  • Reducing inflammation and supporting recovery
Inflammation is a key driver of many types of joint pain. We focus on strategies that help reduce overall inflammatory load and support the body’s ability to recover.
  • Nutrition and metabolic support
Nutrition plays a role in inflammation, tissue repair, and overall joint health. We use evidence-informed strategies to support these processes.
  • Addressing contributing systems
Joint pain is often connected to other areas of health. For example:

    • Hormonal shifts can influence joint comfort and tissue resilience
    • Digestive issues and gut health can affect inflammation levels
    • Sleep disruption can slow recovery and increase pain sensitivity

Addressing these connections is often an important part of improving joint symptoms over time.

  • Herbal medicine and targeted supplements
Some herbal medicine approaches and physician-grade supplements may support inflammation balance, tissue repair, and joint comfort. These are selected based on your individual needs and health history.
  • Screening exams and lab evaluation
When appropriate, we may recommend labs to evaluate inflammatory markers, metabolic health, nutrient status, autoimmune patterns, or other contributing factors.

Medication Use and Prescription Management

Some patients come to us already using medications to manage joint pain, while others are looking for additional ways to support their health and avoid using pain medication and anti-inflammatories long-term.

In some cases, medications can play an important role in managing symptoms and maintaining function.

At Canby Clinic, our goal is to address the broader factors that influence joint health while improving day-to-day comfort and mobility.  We are driven to help find the cause of your joint pain, work with you to relieve symptoms, and restore joint health with the least invasive therapies needed.

Chronic and even emergency health needs go unmet—or are treated with “quick fix” pharmaceuticals. Long-term relationships with doctors who oversee your health from decade to decade are almost obsolete. Canby Care is not insurance or sick care, it’s affordable, high-quality health care. This new non-insurance model is being adopted by many medical clinics throughout the United States with tremendous success. Canby Clinic is the first naturopathic clinic in Oregon to offer this opportunity. Members of Canby Care pay no deductibles, no copays, and no co-insurance, and most of the primary care services offered are included in your membership. Membership is also offered in limited numbers so our doctors can offer highly personalized, quality health care. There is a $75 enrollment fee for new members. Members can cancel their membership for any reason after twelve months with a 30 day written notice. Canby Clinic can terminate the membership for non-payment or any other reason with a 30 day written notice. If we are unable to provide the services promised, Canby Clinic will issue a refund to members for fees paid in advance on a prorated basis.
