Digestive Health/Constipation

Naturopathic Medicine for Long-Term Digestive Health

A Naturopathic Approach to Bloating, Digestive Issues, and Constipation

Digestive concerns are some of the most common and most commonly misdiagnosed conditions out there. Unfortunately, they’re also often the most embarrassing issues patients deal with.

Bloating, irregular bowel movements, and ongoing digestive discomfort are frequently brushed off as “normal,” especially when symptoms come and go. Many patients are told to adjust their diet and/or fiber intake, take an over-the-counter product, or simply avoid certain foods without a clear understanding of why their symptoms occur or persist.

In many cases, acid blockers are recommended or even prescribed. While they might address symptoms by blocking stomach acid, this often leads to poor nutrient absorption (particularly of proteins and minerals, as well as other nutrients).

And, because many people may be on these for years, seeking relief, it can increase their risk of other health conditions like osteoporosis or dementia.

While those approaches can sometimes help, they’re often temporary and don’t address the underlying patterns driving those digestive issues. And so they return.

However, digestion is central to how the body functions. It influences nutrient absorption, energy levels, immune function, hormone balance, and even mood. It’s not actually a case of “you are what you eat,” but rather “you are what you absorb’.

At Canby Clinic, we take the time to understand your full health picture, your symptoms, and how they’ve developed over time. From there, we build a plan rooted in naturopathic medicine that supports both symptom relief and long-term digestive health.

What Digestive Issues Can Feel Like

Digestive symptoms don’t always present the same way, and they don’t always stay consistent. They can come on gradually, or be present since childhood, and patients may not know that their symptoms are a problem because they’ve just grown used to them. Other people have symptoms and may be told ‘it’s all in your head’ and offered an antidepressant or an anxiety medication.

And then, some patients experience daily discomfort, while others notice symptoms that change based on stress, diet, or routine.

This can make them especially frustrating and unpredictable.

Common experiences include:

  • Bloating or abdominal distension/fullness
  • Constipation or infrequent bowel movements
  • Alternating constipation and loose stools
  • Gas, pressure, or discomfort after eating
  • Feeling overly full or heavy after meals
  • Abdominal cramping
  • Acid reflux or indigestion
  • Food sensitivities or reactions
  • Fatigue or brain fog after eating
  • Urgency with bowels
  • Nausea

Even when symptoms seem mild, ongoing digestive issues can affect energy, nutrient absorption, quality of life, inflammation levels, and overall health over time.

Bloating

Bloating is one of the most common digestive complaints, and one of the most misunderstood.

For some, it feels like abdominal distension, which they can see. Pants are fitting too tightly, or they struggle to bend over and tie their shoes. For others, it’s a sense of pressure, fullness, or discomfort that worsens over the course of the day or after eating.

Bloating can be influenced by:

  • Slowed digestion or delayed stomach emptying
  • Imbalances in gut bacteria
  • Fermentation of certain carbohydrates
  • Food sensitivities
  • Constipation or incomplete elimination
  • Hormonal fluctuations
  • Stress and nervous system tension

While occasional bloating can be normal, frequent or persistent bloating is usually a sign that something in the digestive process needs support.

Constipation

Constipation is not just about how often you go. It also includes how easy or complete bowel movements feel.

Some patients have infrequent bowel movements, while others go daily but still feel like they are not fully eliminating.

Constipation may involve:

  • Fewer than three bowel movements per week
  • Hard, dry, or difficult-to-pass stools
  • Straining during bowel movements
  • A feeling of incomplete evacuation
  • Bloating and abdominal discomfort

Common contributors include:

  • Low fiber or fluid intake
  • Dysbiosis or digestive flora imbalance
  • Slowed gut motility
  • Stress and nervous system dysregulation
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Medication side effects
  • Changes in routine or travel
  • Pelvic floor dysfunction

Chronic constipation can affect detoxification, hormone balance, and overall digestive function, which is why it’s important to address more than just frequency.

General Digestive Issues

Some patients don’t fit neatly into one category. Instead, they experience a mix of digestive symptoms that may change over time.

These broader digestive issues can include:

  • Irregular digestion without a clear pattern
  • Sensitivity to certain foods
  • Fluctuating bowel habits
  • Ongoing discomfort after eating
  • A sense that digestion is “off” without a clear diagnosis

Often, these patterns reflect underlying imbalances in digestion, gut function, or the body’s response to stress, food, or inflammation.

In naturopathic medicine, one of our primary goals is to understand these patterns so we can identify root causes. Understanding both is an important step in creating an effective plan.

Why Digestive Issues Happen

Why Digestive Issues Happen

Digestion is not just about food. It involves coordination between the brain, nervous system, stomach, intestines, enzymes, and gut microbiome.

When one part of this system is disrupted, symptoms often follow.

Some of the most common contributors we evaluate include:

  • Chronic stress and nervous system dysregulation
  • Imbalances in gut bacteria
  • Food sensitivities or intolerances
  • Low stomach acid or digestive enzyme activity
  • Inflammation in the digestive tract
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Blood sugar instability
  • Nutrient deficiencies
  • Medication use
  • Changes in routine, travel, or lifestyle

For many patients, digestive issues are not caused by a single factor, but by patterns across multiple systems.

Our Naturopathic Approach to Digestive Health

We understand that health stems from the quality of the digestive tract. Without good digestion, nutrients cannot be absorbed, and the body cannot restore and heal.  We focus on cultivating healthy digestion with each patient over time.  We provide primary care services through a naturopathic medicine approach, focusing on both symptom management and the underlying causes of digestive concerns.

Depending on your needs, your plan may include:

  • Understanding your digestive pattern
Digestive issues vary widely from person to person. We take time to understand your specific symptoms, when they occur, and what may be contributing to them.
  • Nutrition and digestive support
We use evidence-informed nutrition strategies, including IV nutrition when appropriate, to support digestion, reduce symptom triggers, and improve your body’s ability to process food.
  • Gut and microbiome support
The balance of gut bacteria plays a major role in digestion, bloating, and bowel regularity. Supporting this balance is often a key part of care.
  • Stress support and nervous system regulation
The digestive system is closely connected to the nervous system. Stress can slow digestion, contribute to bloating, and disrupt bowel patterns. Supporting this connection is often essential.
  • Herbal medicine and targeted supplements
Some herbal medicine approaches and physician-grade supplements may support digestion, motility, and gut balance. These are selected based on your specific symptoms and needs.
  • Screening exams and lab evaluation
When appropriate, we may recommend labs to evaluate gut health and microbial balance, screen for H. pylori, assess inflammation, nutrient status, thyroid function, and other contributing factors.

Medication Use and Prescription Management

Some patients come to us already using medications for digestive symptoms, while others are trying to manage symptoms on their own, without turning to prescriptions or over-the-counter solutions.

In some cases, medications can play an important role, especially when symptoms or lab results indicate a need.

At Canby Clinic, our goal is to support the underlying drivers of digestive issues while improving day-to-day symptoms. We work to treat the cause of your symptoms and restore the health of the digestive tract.  Healthy digestion is imperative to whole-body health.
