Acid Reflux
Naturopathic Care for Acid Reflux
A Naturopathic Approach to Eczema, Acid Reflux and Digestive Health
Acid reflux symptoms are common, but if you’ve ever experienced them, you know that ignoring them doesn’t work. What you may not know is that acid reflux shouldn’t be ignored or managed indefinitely without understanding why it’s happening.
Instead of addressing the issue, many people respond by avoiding certain foods, taking an antacid, or starting an over-the-counter medication, which can help reduce stomach acid and, in turn, acid reflux.
These approaches might provide some relief, but ultimately, they don’t address the underlying factors contributing to the problem. In short, we’ve addressed symptoms but not the cause.
You may have heard the phrase ‘you are what you eat’, but “you are what you absorb” is more accurate. Acid reflux is a sign that you’re not absorbing vital nutrients efficiently. In other words, your body and tissues aren’t getting the essential elements needed to maintain good health.
Additionally, acid reflux symptoms vary from person to person. In fact, some people may never experience the recognizable burning sensation. but instead deal with symptoms such as chronic throat clearing, coughing, or a feeling that something’s stuck in their throat; this is commonly called silent acid reflux.
If you’ve been dealing with reflux symptoms and feel like you’re managing them rather than understanding them, we’re here to tell you: you’re not alone.
Reflux is often influenced by digestion, nervous system function, diet, and structural factors. Because of this, we believe care should go beyond symptom suppression, beyond a pill, and beyond avoiding triggers.
We take the time to understand your symptoms, patterns, and potential contributors to your acid reflux. From there, we develop a plan rooted in naturopathic medicine to support long-term digestive health.
What Acid Reflux Symptoms Can Feel Like
As solutions are not one-size-fits-all, acid reflux symptoms also differ from person to person. Some patients may experience classic heartburn, while others have less obvious symptoms, including some that can go unrecognized and undiagnosed.
In fact, some people don’t recognize their symptoms as acid reflux at all. Some common symptoms include:
- Burning sensation in the chest (heartburn)
- Regurgitation of food or sour liquid (“baby barfs” in the back of the throat)
- Bloating or pressure after eating
- A sensation of food sitting in the stomach
- Difficulty swallowing or a feeling of something stuck in the throat
- Chronic cough or throat irritation
- Hoarseness or voice changes
- Frequent throat clearing
- Post-nasal drip sensation
- Symptoms that worsen when lying down
Even when these symptoms are mild, long-term acid reflux can affect the esophagus, throat, and overall digestive comfort.
What is Silent Acid Reflux?
Silent acid reflux, also known as laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR), is called silent because it doesn’t always present with heartburn.
Instead, patients with silent acid reflux may experience the following symptoms:
- Chronic throat clearing
- A persistent cough
- Hoarseness or voice fatigue
- A lump in the throat feeling
- Post-nasal drip without congestion
- Irritation when speaking for long periods
Because these symptoms aren’t often recognized as acid reflux, they are frequently misdiagnosed or misattributed to other conditions such as allergies, sinus issues, or respiratory conditions.
Causes of Acid Reflux
Contrary to popular opinion, acid reflux is rarely caused by “too much acid.”
In fact, for most people, it is actually related to too little acid. Acid reflux is a signal that the digestive system is not functioning well overall, from how food moves through the stomach to how the body regulates pressure between the stomach and esophagus.
In a naturopathic practice, some of the most common contributors we evaluate include:
- Slowed digestion or delayed stomach emptying
- Dysfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES)
- Increased abdominal pressure
- Diet and meal timing
- Stress and nervous system dysregulation
- Hiatal hernias
- Food sensitivities
- Weight changes
- Metabolic factors
- Medication side effects
- Sleeping position and sleep hygiene
- H. Pylori or other floral imbalances
- Constipation, bloating, and gas
For many patients, acid reflux often develops from multiple, often overlapping, factors. This is why strategies like avoiding specific trigger foods don’t fix the problem.
Our Naturopathic Approach to Acid Reflux
We provide primary care services through a naturopathic medicine approach. Instead of focusing solely on symptom relief, we also want to address the underlying causes of acid reflux.
Depending on your needs, your plan may include:
- Understanding your reflux pattern
Acid reflux presents differently depending on timing, triggers, and underlying causes. We look to understand when symptoms occur, what worsens them, and how they’ve developed over time. - Nutrition and meal support
Of course, diet plays a role in reflux, but avoiding trigger foods isn’t a long-term solution. We’ll look at how, when, and what you eat can support digestion better and reduce triggers. - Supporting smoother digestion
Acid reflux may be connected to how efficiently your digestive system functions. Slow digestion can mean food stays in your stomach longer than ideal. This creates pressure that can result in acid reflux symptoms.
- Stress reduction and nervous system regulation
For many folks, the first signs of stress reveal how closely linked our nervous and digestive systems are. Often, when we’re stressed, we eat differently (or not at all). Not only does this affect digestion, but it can also increase food sensitivities. Understanding this connection is often key to addressing the root causes. - Herbal medicine and targeted supplements
Some herbal medicine and physician-grade supplements can help support digestion and soothe irritation. Others may help address other systemic causes and offer whole-body support. Supplement recommendations are always individualized and tailored to your experience and symptoms. - Screening exams and lab evaluation
Our goal is always to understand the full picture. When appropriate, we may recommend lab tests or other evaluations to better understand potential contributing factors such as digestive function, inflammation, H. Pylori infection, or other related conditions. Again, there are often layered causes rather than a single factor, and our goal is to address the system, not the symptoms.
Medication Use and Prescription Management
Many patients with acid reflux symptoms are already using antacids or acid-suppressing medications when they come to see us.
These medications can provide important relief, especially in the short term or in more severe cases.
At the same time, some patients want to understand whether there are additional ways to support their digestion and reduce reliance on long-term medication.
Our goal is to support the underlying factors contributing to reflux while improving day-to-day symptoms.
What to Expect at Your Visit
We start by listening. Your first appointment includes time to discuss:
- Your acid reflux symptoms and when they occur
- Digestive patterns, including any bloating or discomfort
- Diet, meal timing, and eating habits
- Stress, sleep, and daily routine
- Past diagnoses or testing
- Current medications and supplements
- How your symptoms are affecting your daily life
With this information, we can build a treatment plan that is practical, personalized, and focused on long-term digestive health.
